Wedding Carbon Calculator
Planning a wedding involves hundreds of decisions, from venues to suppliers, but few couples stop to consider the environmental impact of these choices. Guest travel, venue energy use, catering, and even the materials used in your décor all contribute to your wedding’s carbon footprint. Understanding this impact is the first step toward making informed, conscious choices that align with your values.
Our free calculator helps you visualise where your biggest emissions come from, so you can focus your efforts where they’ll make the most difference.
How to Use the Calculator
Be as accurate as possible: The calculator uses standard emission factors to estimate your impact. For the most meaningful result, try to gather specific details before you start, such as approximate travel distances for guests or the split between meat and plant-based dishes.
Don’t stress over perfection: If you don’t know an exact number, choose the closest option or select “unknown.” The tool is designed to give you a realistic baseline, not a precise audit.
Save your progress: You can save your current calculations via a unique link. Bookmark it securely so you can return later to refine your plans as you finalise details with suppliers.
Desktop recommended: While the calculator works on mobile, it is optimized for laptop or desktop use, especially if you have many international guests whose travel distances need checking.

Don’t forget to save using the magic link – if you don’t have all the details you need now, save your progress, grab what you need and come back to the calculator to pick up where you left off.
We’ve included many of the common elements of a wedding in the calculator, and will be regularly refining and adding to the sections based on the data that is available. If there is something specific you’d like to see, please email us.
What can you do?
Once you hit calculate, the tool will break down your wedding’s estimated carbon footprint into two key areas: a visual breakdown of your total impact and your “Top 3 Carbon Culprits.”
The Donut Chart
You’ll see a coloured donut chart representing your total emissions. This gives you an immediate snapshot of where your biggest impacts lie. Hover over each segment to see the specific kilogram count for that category. This helps you identify if one area, like catering or travel, is dominating your footprint or if the impact is spread evenly across many choices.
Your Top 3 Carbon Culprits
To make the data tangible, we highlight your top three highest-emitting categories. For each, we provide a relatable equivalent to help visualise the scale – for example, comparing your food emissions to cups of tea boiled, or your travel emissions to the weight of sumo wrestlers. These comparisons are designed to turn abstract numbers into something concrete, giving you a clear starting point for making adjustments.
What Now? Put Your Numbers to Work
Seeing your results is the first step; acting on them is where the real change happens. Use your “Top 3” as a roadmap. If Food & Drink is your biggest contributor, look into sourcing locally or increasing plant-based options. If Travel dominates, consider encouraging guests to carpool or stay closer by. And if Clothing & Accessories is high, explore pre-loved or rental options for your attire.
Below, we’ve linked some of our most popular guides to help you tackle these specific areas:

A Note on Offsetting
Calculating your footprint is crucial, but reduction should always be your primary goal. Offsetting can play a supporting role by compensating for unavoidable emissions, but it shouldn’t be used as a license to ignore high-impact choices. If you do decide to offset, look for certified projects that deliver measurable climate benefits, such as reforestation or renewable energy initiatives.

Think of sustainability as the ultimate upgrade to your “something borrowed” tradition.
How was the calculator developed?
The wedding carbon footprint calculator was a project managed by the Sustainable Wedding Alliance. The data was gathered by Carbon Footprint and the calculator built as a web based app by the super talented team at Wholegrain Digital.
We will be updating the data frequently when the Greenhouse Gas emissions data is updated and as more event industry specific data becomes available. We have also commissioned some more detailed calculations of some of the wedding elements, which will allow us to increase the accuracy of the overall result.
